RYAN S.
BROTMAN
Ryan S. Brotman possesses over a decade of experience in
transdisciplinary research, a doctorate in design from Arizona State University and has served as a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University
and Queen’s University. Currently, he works at Idea Couture as a co-head of wearable technologies. His team engages with C-suites of organizations to deliver strategic innovation, design
new capabilities and introduce novel, go-to-market offerings for mobile and wearable computers, the Internet of Things, intelligent transportation systems and healthcare.
Prior to this work, Dr. Brotman spearheaded user experience
research and development initiatives at Intel Labs for portable, mobile and wearable computers, as well as intelligent transportation systems. His research resulted in Intel’s first
wearable computer user experience strategy and offerings, including the Intel MICA smart bracelet. His work on intelligent transportation systems will enter global markets via automotive OEM partners in 2018.
Within the arena of health, Dr. Brotman has collaborated with a number of leading health organizations, including Arizona State University’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation, the University of North Carolina College of Medicine, New York University’s
College of Nursing, Intel’s Digital Health Group, Herman Miller Healthcare and Humana. His work explores the intersections between future technologies, care guidance and delivery and the coevolution of formal and informal care environments. In addition, he participates in ACM CHI, UIST, and DIS communities as both
a reviewer and author and has served as an reviewer for the International Journal of Gerontology.
His projects have appeared in The Guardian, on Cnet.com and Discovery Channel Online, as well as at CES. In 2013, Dr. Brotman’s projects received nominations for “Innovation of the Year” from both t3.com and stuff.tv and were nominated for an Interaction

SESSION: Global aging population: peril of end-of-life care crisis and promise of human centered re-design.
After defining the problem for USA and similar system, we will discuss example on how can we ‘survive’ our own mortality and overcome the “crisis” of end-of-life care. We will specifically review selected end-of-life care innovation and discuss how more empathetic practices serve to solve the concerns.
